old statics stencil diagram.jpg

Made this stencil in probably spring of 2005.  At the time I was in Ysrael Seinuk's Structures class at Cooper Union.  This effortlessly charming Cuban man in a suit would now and then remind us that a t shirt with this diagram, representing the at 90 degrees relationship of tension and compression, as well as the resulting at 45 degrees shear, along with the three conditions that the sum of all vertical, horizontal, and moment forces equal zero, was all that one needed to understand and do structures, and that the 'diarrhea of words and numbers' generally spouted by those not so cooly in the know was wasting time much better spent at the beach.

The sum of vertical, horizontal, and moment forces all equal zero.

The sum of vertical, horizontal, and moment forces all equal zero.

And so with this information and our photocopied-by-the-school-office out of print text books we learned how to represent structures as 'free body diagrams' and work out the reactions using only our nose and the laws of static equilibrium.

This went on for some years.  At some later point my friend Ido Nissani got the school of architecture to pay to have the shirts printed for the student body.  Unfortunately Seinuk passed away in 2010, according to Wikipedia Donald Trump called him 'the best in the business' he certainly made a great impression on me and I do have a certain love for the stark monolith he made for said president.

Thank you!

Thank you!
